French national team coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed that forward Hugo Ekitike will miss the 2026 World Cup after suffering a serious injury during Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
During the match, Ekitike went down in pain in the first half, holding his lower rig
ht leg. As a result, early reports suggest a possible ruptured Achilles tendon, which could keep him out for several months. Because of this, he is expected to miss the rest of the season and the World Cup.
Speaking after the incident, Deschamps expressed deep sadness over the setback. He said: “Hugo is one of the dozen young players who have made their debuts with the national team in recent months. He had perfectly integrated into the group, both on the pitch and off it. This injury is a huge blow for him, of course, but also for the France team.”
”His disappointment is immense. Hugo will regain his top form, I’m convinced of it. But I wanted to express all my support to him, as well as that of the entire staff. We know he’ll be fully behind the France team, and we’re all thinking of him very strongly.”

He also added: “Unfortunately, the severity of his injury will prevent him from finishing the season with Liverpool and taking part in the World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Deschamps explained that Ekitike had become an important part of the national team setup. In addition, he praised his quick adaptation to the squad and his positive influence in camp.
However, he made it clear that the entire team stands behind the young striker. At the same time, he expressed confidence that Ekitike will recover and return stronger.
Before the injury, Ekitike was enjoying a strong season for Liverpool, scoring 17 goals in 45 matches since his move last summer. Likewise, he had also begun making an impact for France, with two goals and one assist in eight appearances.
