The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has confirmed the release of previously withheld local government allocations, assuring that immediate steps will be taken to facilitate the prompt payment of workers’ salaries.
During a meeting with Heads of Local Government Administrators in Port Harcourt, Ibas described the occasion as a critical step toward restoring stability and progress in the state.
Expressing concern over the persistent economic hardship in the Niger Delta, he lamented that despite the region’s abundant resources, many residents still face financial struggles.
“This situation cannot continue,” he declared, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility and urgent reforms.
Ibas acknowledged the distress caused by delayed salary payments, assuring affected workers that his administration was committed to resolving the issue.

“I understand the difficulties faced by workers. The withheld allocations have now been released, and we will ensure that salaries are paid promptly,” he stated.
However, he stressed that financial discipline would be strictly enforced, directing all local government councils to submit their payroll records, supported by necessary documentation, through the office of the Head of Service.
He warned against mismanagement, vowing to closely monitor the handling of public funds and take decisive action against any irregularities.
“Good governance is not just a slogan—it is a responsibility. We have six months to change the narrative,” Ibas asserted.
Beyond financial matters, he emphasised the need for collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies to strengthen grassroots security.
“Local government administrators must take the lead in ensuring safety within their jurisdictions,” he urged.
In response, the President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Clifford Paul, commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas, attributing the decision to his strong leadership credentials.
He praised the administrator’s efforts so far, pledging support for his mission to restore peace and stability.
