The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has emphasised the need to make Nigeria more accessible to tourists.

He cited the unprecedented influx of visitors during last December’s festivities as a wake-up call for the government.

Speaking on ‘Politics Today’ on Channels Television, Tunji-Ojo highlighted how the surge in foreign visitors positively impacted the economy.

He stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to improving access to Nigeria for legitimate travellers to boost tourism and foreign investment.

“We must ensure that people who genuinely want to visit and explore Nigeria can do so without unnecessary barriers,”  he said.

“The record number of visitors last December proves that Nigeria has the potential to be a major tourist destination.”

As part of efforts to facilitate smoother entry, the minister announced an upgrade to the country’s visa system.

The new e-visa framework aims to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles associated with the traditional visa-on-arrival process.

Tunji-Ojo explained that while visa-on-arrival remains an option, the e-visa enhances efficiency by allowing applicants to receive approvals digitally, complete with a QR code—eliminating the need for physical visa stickers at Nigerian airports.

“This approach aligns with global best practices in countries like the UAE, Australia, and Qatar,” he noted.

“It simplifies the process, making it easier for visitors and investors to come to Nigeria.”
