The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has underscored the critical role of Nigeria’s civil service in implementing President Bola Tinubu’s ambitious macroeconomic reforms.

Speaking at the launch of the Federal Civil Service Policies and Guidelines and the commemoration of Didi Esther Walson-Jack’s 100 days in office as Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr Edun described the civil service as the backbone of national progress.

Addressing a gathering at the Federal Ministry of Finance auditorium, the Minister outlined the administration’s reform agenda, which aims to reduce inflation, spur economic growth, create jobs, and alleviate poverty.

He called on civil servants to rise to the challenge, noting that their competence, discipline, and determination are key to successfully executing these reforms.

“You are the implementers. Your role is central to the success of our economic transformation”, he said.

Mr Edun acknowledged the discomfort brought about by subsidy removal but emphasised its long-term benefits, highlighting the significant resources—equivalent to 5% of Nigeria’s GDP—freed for reinvestment in infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

These areas, he noted, are critical for sustainable national development.

The Minister also spotlighted the shift in Nigeria’s economic structure from dependency on rent-seeking to genuine value creation.

He pointed to growth opportunities in agriculture, manufacturing, and exports, noting that Nigerian products are increasingly gaining traction across Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

“Nigeria is undergoing a transformative shift. This is a time for skill, knowledge, and innovation to drive economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty.”

Commending Mrs Walson-Jack’s leadership, Mr Edun described her agenda as a roadmap for a modern, technology-driven civil service aligned with the administration’s goals.

He urged civil servants to embrace innovation and efficiency in their work.
