The immediate past Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has dismissed insinuations that he failed to consult President Bola Tinubu before resigning from the Federal Executive Council.
In a statement issued on Saturday through his media aide, Mr Femi Awogboro, Adelabu clarified that he obtained the full approval and blessing of the President before deciding to step down. He stressed that his resignation was not in any way contrary to President Tinubu’s wishes.

Adelabu resigns as power minister to pursue Oyo governorship bid
Adelabu resigned to focus on his ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reports had suggested he acted without proper consultations, but the former minister insisted such claims were baseless and misleading.
“Adelabu actually obtained the full approval and blessing of President Tinubu before taking the decision to resign,” the statement read. “Those spreading false speculations should desist, as such claims are unfounded.”
His resignation took effect at the end of April 2026, in line with provisions of the amended Electoral Act, allowing him to fully commit to his gubernatorial bid.
He reportedly met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja earlier in the week, where he presented a comprehensive report on the power sector and outlined his political intentions.
The former minister’s return to Ibadan last Thursday was met with an unprecedented crowd of supporters, who welcomed him warmly from the airport to his residence.
Adelabu’s team attributed the criticism directed at him to this massive show of support, suggesting that opponents were unsettled by the enthusiasm among APC members and the public in Oyo State.
“Critics have nothing tangible to hold against Adelabu and are only unsettled by the unprecedented crowd that welcomed him back to Ibadan,” the statement added.
Adelabu, a prominent APC chieftain and former Oyo State gubernatorial aspirant, is expected to play a key role in strengthening the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 polls.
His exit from the cabinet follows the recent minor reshuffle announced by the Presidency and aligns with President Tinubu’s directive for appointees eyeing elective positions to resign.
