The Federal Government has declared Monday, September 16th, a public holiday in observance of Eid-ul-Maulud. In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the holiday to honor the birth of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. 

Eid-ul-Maulud, also known as Mawlid al-Nabi, commemorates the birth of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is observed by many Muslims worldwide on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. The occasion is marked with various religious and cultural activities, including recitations of the Quran, prayers, sermons, and reflections on the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad. 

Minister Tunji-Ojo extended his congratulations to Muslims in Nigeria and abroad, encouraging them to embrace values such as patience, sacrifice, and resilience during this period of reflection. 

The statement read: “The Federal Government has declared Monday, September 16th, 2024, a public holiday to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated the Muslim Ummah both at home and in the diaspora on this occasion.” 

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also urged Muslims and Nigerians at large to embrace the spirit of patience, sacrifice, and resilience. He implored them to use this period to pray for enduring peace and a more prosperous, egalitarian nation.
