President Bola Tinubu has called on the newly sworn-in 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to uphold the confidence of Nigerians in democracy.

Earlier, The New Daily Prime reported that President Tinubu presided over Justice Kekere-Ekun’s swearing-in ceremony, during which she took the oath of office and signed the oath register at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

In a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Mr Tinubu emphasised the CJN’s critical role as the last hope of the common man.

He highlighted that Nigerians must be reassured of the judiciary’s capacity to offer redress whenever they are wronged.

President Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the judiciary’s independence and sanctity, while underscoring the institution’s vital role in protecting Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

He said: ”The judiciary is an important pillar constituting the tripod that holds our constitutional democracy. Indeed, the Nigerian judiciary, at various times in history, has proven to be the moderating force ensuring everyone remains in check.

”Your role as the last hope of the common man serves to sustain our people’s confidence in democracy, knowing well that there is an important arbiter that can always give them redress if they are wronged.

”For this function, it is important that our judiciary remains truly independent. It is my administration’s total commitment to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary.

”While we may have reasons to interface as complementing components of the same government, under my watch, the government will also be mindful of the clear line demarcating the two of us.”

He stressed his commitment to maintaining the independence of each branch of government, stating that he would never interfere or undermine the relationship between them.

He underscored the importance of this separation in preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

Additionally,  Mr Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers, highlighting recent measures aimed at enhancing their ability to deliver justice efficiently.

He encouraged Justice Kekere-Ekun to continue exemplifying the values of ethical leadership, courage, and integrity that have been the hallmark of her distinguished career.

”The Nigerian judiciary needs a leader with these qualities at this time, and I have no doubt that you will set the pace for others to follow,” he said.

The President lauded Justice Kekere-Ekun’s rise as a testament to hard work and an inspiration to women, particularly young girls, in a male-dominated profession.

”This day has also cemented the judiciary as a self-evolving and progressive institution. I specifically congratulate the Nigerian women. Any girl child can dream big and have her dreams come true. It is worth celebrating, ” he said

President Tinubu also recognised the esteemed presence of Justice Kekere-Ekun’s 89-year-old mother, Mama Wilfred Layiwola Ogundimu (née Savage), along with other family members, including her husband, Akin Kekere-Ekun.

The President expressed gratitude to the Senate for swiftly confirming the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and extended his appreciation to the judiciary for their unwavering support.
