President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, swore in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The New Daily Prime earlier reported that the Senate confirmed Kekere-Ekun’s appointment last week.

According to The Punch newspaper, Justice Kekere-Ekun took the oath of office and signed the oath register at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja. 

She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. 

Ariwoola assumed office on 27 June 2022 and retired on 22 August 2024 after reaching retirement age of 70.

The swearing-in ceremony was graced by three of her predecessors: Justice Aloma Mukhtar, Nigeria’s first female CJN; Justice Mahmud Mohammed; Justice Walter Onnoghen; as well as her immediate predecessor, Justice Ariwoola. 

Also in attendance were members of her family and other justices of the Supreme Court.
