The Rivers State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspect involved in the shooting attack that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at Elele Roundabout, located in Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

This development follows a widely circulated video on Facebook showing about five persons attend to at Madonna Hospital, which sparked widespread reactions from netizens.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the command, stated in a document shared with Journalists on Wednesday revealed that four persons were injured in the attack.

Iringe-Koko said the arrest was made following credible intelligence led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), along with his patrol team from Elele Division.

“During an attempt to address the crowd, an unidentified assailant, hiding within the vicinity, opened fire, resulting in multiple injuries. As of press time, the number of those injured stood at four,” she said.

“The armed hoodlums fled the scene immediately, but one of them was apprehended, and a single-barrel gun was recovered from him.”

The spokesperson noted that the victims had been moved to various hospitals within Elele for immediate medical attention.

Moreover, in an effort to apprehend the fleeing suspects, Iringe-Koko said a manhunt has been initiated, as some of them have been identified as members of a local vigilante group known as OSPAC.

“The arrested suspect, along with the recovered firearm, will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation,” Iringe-Koko affirmed.

The command, however, assured the public that the perpetrators of the attack would be brought to justice.

While reaffirming their commitment to ensuring a safe environment for residents, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, urged residents to remain calm and provide any useful information to assist in the ongoing investigation.
