President Bola Tinubu on Monday, December 30, extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the United States on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100.
Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family, according to a statement from The Carter Centre.
In a release from the State House, President Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, praised Carter as a global beacon of service and a model of post-presidential impact.
“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” Tinubu remarked.
He highlighted Carter’s efforts in addressing global challenges, including combating diseases, mediating conflicts, and promoting democratic values. “He exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity,” Tinubu said.
President Tinubu fondly recalled Carter’s significant contributions to Nigeria, particularly through The Carter Centre’s efforts in eradicating Guinea worm disease and river blindness. These initiatives, Tinubu noted, “have significantly improved the lives of many Nigerians.”
Reflecting on Carter’s historic visit to Nigeria in March 1978, Tinubu lauded the former U.S. President’s role in fostering a pragmatic relationship between the United States and Africa. The three-day visit to Lagos marked a turning point in U.S.-Africa relations, with Nigeria at its center.
As a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and a statesman, Carter devoted his post-presidential years to peacebuilding, democracy promotion, and tackling tropical diseases.
“His unwavering commitment to these noble pursuits has left an indelible mark on the world,” the statement read.
Tinubu emphasised the lessons from Carter’s life, calling his legacy one of “decency, character, and humanity.” He expressed hope that Carter’s example will inspire leaders globally to embrace the true essence of leadership.
“President Carter was a trustworthy and compassionate friend to Nigeria,” Tinubu concluded, honoring Carter’s life and his profound impact on humanity.
Carter’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary journey, but his influence will endure in the hearts of those he touched and the initiatives he championed.
