Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has pledged to act on the findings and recommendations of the Assets Verification Committee, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to accountability and transparency in managing state resources.
Speaking at the Government House in Benin City, where he received the committee’s report, Governor Okpebholo commended the team for their diligence and assured them their recommendations would not be overlooked.
“I appreciate the committee for a job well done and the time invested in this exercise. I understand the challenges you faced, yet you successfully carried out this crucial assignment. Rest assured that your findings and recommendations will be implemented appropriately,” the governor stated.
Presenting the report, the committee’s chairman, Ernest Umakhihe, emphasised that their work was not merely a review of past actions but a roadmap for a more transparent and accountable government.

“This report serves as a pivotal moment for Edo State, marking the need to take stock of our current position and chart a course toward greater accountability, financial prudence, and responsible asset management,” Umakhihe said.
He highlighted that the committee’s work involved weeks of extensive research, site inspections, stakeholder engagements, and thorough verification to ensure a clear understanding of the state’s financial and asset situation.
The report provides a detailed breakdown of Edo State’s assets and liabilities, including outstanding debts, contractual obligations, and financial commitments.
It also raises concerns about resource mismanagement, improper allocation, and the questionable involvement of consultants in government operations, which, according to the committee, created loopholes for corruption and abuse.
“One of the critical aspects of this report is the revelation of significant financial obligations left behind by the previous administration, some of which pose a heavy burden on the state’s fiscal health.
“These liabilities, including outstanding debts and contracts, require urgent attention and strategic management,” Umakhihe explained.
The committee recommended a review of specific government contracts and agreements to ensure they align with the state’s best interests.
It also uncovered evidence of financial misconduct, mismanagement, and possible corruption, urging further investigations to hold those responsible accountable.

“In light of these findings, we strongly recommend that the relevant authorities launch further investigations to hold those responsible accountable. Prosecuting individuals found culpable will send a strong message that Edo State is committed to integrity and transparency in governance,” DrUmakhihe stated.
Additionally, the committee advised the government to reassess agreements, leases, and tenancies to ensure they serve the state’s economic interests.
It also suggested scrutinizing corporate entities with unclear ownership structures linked to past administrations.
“As we submit this report, we do so with the firm belief that its recommendations will serve as a guide toward a more transparent, accountable, and prosperous Edo State,” Umakhihe said.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s determination to address the issues raised in the report, pledging decisive action to strengthen governance and ensure responsible management of Edo State’s resources.
