Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has introduced relief measures for state workers in response to the rising petrol prices.
The New Daily Prime previously reported that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) increased the price of petrol last week.
In its Wednesday report, The Punch newspaper revealed that Ogun State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, announced that Governor Abiodun approved two days off per week for civil servants on Grade Levels 01-14.
The initiative, aimed at alleviating commuting challenges faced by workers due to the fuel price increase, also applies to higher-level officers. Those on Grade Levels 15-17 will receive one day off per week.
Mr. Onasanya stated, “The gesture is intended to ease the burden on workers who are now facing greater challenges commuting to work. It is expected to provide substantial relief while enhancing service delivery through a more motivated and energized workforce.”
While emphasizing Governor Abiodun’s commitment to workers’ welfare, Mr. Onasanya directed accounting officers to implement the policy across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies without compromising service delivery.
According to Mr. Onasanya, in July 2023, the governor introduced a one-day-off policy for all grade levels. The current extension to two days off for GL 01-14 aims to reduce financial strain and boost productivity. This marks the second time within a week that the Ogun State government has introduced relief measures to combat the soaring petrol prices. Earlier this week, the government announced the release of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to local transport unions to mitigate the impact of the recent fuel price hike. This initiative was unveiled during a strategic meeting with transport union leaders on Monday
