To ensure fair and efficient pricing for mini-grid projects in the country, the
Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has adopted the African Forum for Utility Regulators (AFUR) Mini-Grid Tariff Tool.
A statement posted on NRRC’s X page today said the adoption was in collaboration with AFUR and key stakeholders.
NERC added that the tool has been designed to simplify the process of determining cost-reflective tariffs for mini-grid operations.
One of its standout features is the introduction of Portfolio Applications, which enables developers to register multiple mini-grid sites under a single application.
This innovation, the Commission said, promotes regulatory efficiency, reduces end-user tariffs, and provides economies of scale for project developers.
The tool aligns with the amended Mini-Grid Regulations 2023 and is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s mini-grid subsector.
Additionally, the AFUR Mini-Grid Tariff Tool will be rolled out in 30 other African countries in the coming years, fostering regulatory consistency and making cross-border operations easier for developers.
From Monday, December 16, 2024, all mini-grid developers in Nigeria will be required to use this tool to file permit applications with NERC.
“It is now available for download on the Commission’s official website: nerc.gov.ng/resources/afur.
“This initiative marks a critical step toward enhancing Nigeria’s energy sector and addressing electricity challenges across Africa”, the statement added.
