Lagos APC denies directive for LG chairmen seeking re-election to resign

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has dismissed reports claiming that incumbent Local Government chairmen seeking re-election have been asked to resign ahead of the 2025 council elections.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, described the rumours as “fake news” intended to mislead the public and party members.

“Our attention has been drawn to a false directive purportedly issued by the Lagos State Chairman of APC, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, requiring incumbent Council Chairmen seeking re-election to resign. We want to make it abundantly clear that there is no iota of truth in this publication, which has been twisted to serve the publisher’s interest,” Oladejo said.

He clarified that the only directive issued by the party applies to APC Local Government party chairmen who aspire to contest in the forthcoming elections. These individuals must step down from their roles to ensure a fair electoral process.

Oladejo further explained, “Local government party chairmen who are also aspirants in the upcoming elections will be required to resign their current positions when the guidelines are released. This is to avoid situations where they serve as both contestants and umpires.”

The APC urged party members and the general public to desist from spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary tension or disrupt the political atmosphere.

This clarification comes amidst heightened political activities ahead of the 2025 council elections in Lagos State.
