In a significant move towards achieving universal health coverage, the Kogi State Government has announced that it has enrolled 167,000 residents in its health insurance scheme.
This milestone was revealed by the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Health Insurance Agency, Adekunle Aledare, during a briefing in Lokoja on Monday, following his presentation of the agency’s 2025 budget.
Aledare further disclosed that the agency aims to extend coverage to an additional 150,000 residents in the coming year, as part of its ongoing efforts to provide equitable access to healthcare services for all Kogi citizens.
“So far, we have enrolled 167,000 individuals, but we are mandated to ensure that every resident of Kogi State has access to quality healthcare without suffering financial hardship,” Aledare said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the programme.
The health insurance initiative is a key component of the state’s plan to offer affordable healthcare services to its residents, with the aim of safeguarding them from the financial burdens often associated with medical care.
Aledare called on Kogi citizens to embrace the health insurance scheme, stressing that it is the most effective way to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). He explained that health insurance guarantees financial protection and provides peace of mind, ensuring that people are not pushed into poverty due to hospital bills.
“With health insurance, the people’s health is assured. We are prepared to ensure that the people of Kogi State have access to good health services without suffering financial hardship,” he said. “No one should be impoverished as a result of paying for health services. That’s why health insurance is vital—it ensures financial protection and offers a path to a healthier, more secure life.”
The Kogi State Health Insurance Agency’s ambitious enrolment target for 2025 highlights the state’s commitment to expanding access to healthcare, with the goal of reducing the financial barriers to medical treatment for its residents.
