Kano DisCo launches installation of 4,000 free prepaid meters

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced the commencement of the installation of over 4,000 prepaid meters for its Band A and Band B customers.

This initiative is part of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) program, introduced by the Federal Government to close the metering gap in Nigeria’s power sector.

KEDCO’s management stated that the company has engaged approved Meter Asset Providers (MAPs) to supply and install the prepaid meters as part of efforts to improve metering coverage in the region. The meters provided under this initiative are free of charge for eligible customers.

The MAF is overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and it aims to complement other metering efforts to rapidly close the metering gap, which is crucial for achieving accurate billing and ensuring cost recovery in the electricity sector.

KEDCO emphasised that while the meters are free, it will determine the beneficiaries of the program to ensure sustainable growth in the power sector.

Currently, Nigeria faces a significant metering gap, with around seven million customers still without proper meters, leading to the widespread use of estimated billing.

The installation of these meters is seen as a key step in addressing this challenge and improving the efficiency of the electricity distribution system.
