The founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) and Editor-in-Chief, Fisayo Soyombo, has regained freedom after three day in detention.
The fIJ confirmed that the founder that was detained by the Nigerian Army (NA) for three days has been set free.
The New Daily Prime reported that Soyombo, the publisher of FIJ, was detained by the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Nigerian Army earlier, in a release, said he was under investigation under the allegation of illegal oil theft.
However, the NA described his location as unlawful, whereas FIJ debunked the claim as a “deliberate mischaracterization” of Soyombo’s activities.
The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria disclosed its significant role in the release of the investigative journalist, noting their underground work in upholding the rights of Soyombo.
IPI expressed gratitude to the release of FIJ Founder, Soyombo, noting their commitment to upholding and defending press freedom and journalists who face legal challenges during work time.
Through their X handle on Friday, FIJ expressed gratitude for the collective support from members of the public during his detention.
Moreso, after the founder’s release, the team raised concern over the safety of Soyombo as he disclosed further information to the NA about his investigative field work.
This has led the FIJ’s to publicly announce that they will monitor the situation to protect Soyombo from further attack.
