The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has assured Nigerians of better results in the fight against all forms of security challenges plaguing the country.
Oluyede spoke in Abuja on Monday shortly after visiting President Bola Tinubu at the presidential villa.
Reiterating his commitment to improving Nigeria’s security situation, Oluyede hinted at innovative approach and enhanced collaboration with neighbouring countries.
The newly appointed COAS highlighted his dedication to making a meaningful difference in the country’s fight against insecurity.
Answering questions about his visit to the president, Oluyede said, “I am here to reassure the President that I will do my best to make Nigeria better in terms of security.
“I am going to explore different approaches to achieve results that will make the country safer. I have come to seek his support, which he has consistently provided over the years. I am confident he will continue to support us as we aim for better outcomes.”
The COAS also shared insights from his recent visits to military formations in the Northeast and Northwest, which have remained hotspots for insecurity, especially insurgency and banditry.
He said, “I visited the Northwest division and the theatre operations in the Northeast. My goal was to engage with my officers and soldiers directly, to emphasise the urgency of ending all forms of insecurity in Nigeria. I have made it clear that we will be doing things differently, and I expect better results moving forward.”
The Army Chief stressed the importance of joint military efforts with neighbouring countries to tackle cross-border threats, including the Lakurawa insurgents.
“We are engaging with neighbouring countries because insecurity affects all of us. When we hit them hard at the Nigerian end, they often flee to Niger Republic. Now that Niger Republic is stepping up its collaboration with us, we are optimistic that Lakurawa will soon be a thing of the past,” he said.
