A former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to exercise caution when relying on his inner circle for recommendations regarding ministerial appointments. His comments come amidst reports of a potential cabinet reshuffle.
The Oyo-born politician made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday, September 26. He emphasized the importance of critically evaluating those who influence ministerial selections, warning that some members of the President’s “kitchen cabinet” may have vested interests that could cloud their judgment.
“You cannot trust anybody, even if you are talking of the kitchen cabinet,” Shittu stated.
He pointed out that this will be Tinubu’s first time appointing individuals from diverse backgrounds across the country, many of whom he may not have met previously. He cautioned that recommendations from influential factions within the party could prioritize personal interests over the nation’s needs.
“Mr. President has an opportunity to decide what he wants,” Shittu explained.
He noted that without clear communication of his expectations, the appointment process could be flawed. He criticized the lack of an orientation exercise for newly appointed ministers, suggesting that a brief training period could help align their priorities with those of the President.
Shittu’s comments reflect growing concerns about the performance of some ministers and the increasing calls for Tinubu to consider a cabinet reshuffle to address these issues.
As the President prepares for potential changes, the effectiveness of his decision-making process will be closely scrutinized.
