The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that Augustine Eguavoen will continue as the interim head coach of the Super Eagles as they prepare for the upcoming qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This decision was ratified following a recommendation from the NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee.
In an official statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the NFF emphasized the importance of Eguavoen’s leadership in guiding the national team during this critical phase of qualification.
“The Executive Committee of Nigeria Football Federation… approved the recommendation for Coach Augustine Eguavoen to continue in his role as Head Coach of the Super Eagles,” the statement read.
Currently, Nigeria tops Group B with four points after a convincing 3-0 victory against Benin Republic and a goalless draw with Rwanda earlier this month. The Super Eagles’ next challenge will be a home match against Libya on October 6, 2024, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, where Eguavoen’s tactical acumen will once again be put to the test.
Eguavoen is no stranger to the national team, marking his fourth tenure as head coach. His previous experience has been marked by notable successes, particularly in high-pressure situations, reinforcing his position as the NFF’s preferred choice during this AFCON qualifying campaign.
In addition to leading the Super Eagles, Eguavoen has also been appointed to manage the Super Eagles B team for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament exclusively featuring players from domestic leagues. This edition of CHAN will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, taking place from February 1 to 28, 2025.
Supporting Eguavoen in this endeavor will be his technical crew, which includes Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, Olatunji Baruwa, and Tomaz Zorec, all of whom are expected to play crucial roles throughout the campaign.
In related developments, the NFF has made interim changes to the Super Falcons’ coaching staff following the unexpected departure of Randy Waldrum. Coach Justin Madugu has been appointed to oversee the senior women’s national team until a permanent head coach is named.
The Super Falcons are currently gearing up for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco next summer.
As Nigeria prepares for the next stage of AFCON qualifiers, all eyes will be on Eguavoen and his squad as they strive to secure their place in the prestigious tournament.
