Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic, a privately owned institution in Akwa Ibom State, has refuted allegations of issuing fraudulent admission letters for a Medical Laboratory Science programme.

In a statement released on Monday in Uyo, Acting Rector Samuel Etim firmly clarified that the institution does not offer a degree programme in Medical Laboratory Science, nor does it operate a department for the course.

The clarification followed a report published by the *Nigerian Tribune* on December 13, 2024, by the Association of University Academic Medical Laboratory Scientists. The publication, titled *“Illegal Mounting of Medical Lab Science Degree Programme,”* alleged that Ibom Polytechnic had issued admission letters to candidates for the course.

Etim, however, dismissed the claims, stating, *“The purported letter did not emanate from Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic (IMP). It is on record that IMP does not offer a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, has no department for such a course, and has not admitted any student into this non-existent programme.”*

The Acting Rector emphasized that only the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is authorized to issue valid admission letters to candidates seeking enrollment in accredited institutions for a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) degree.

Describing the allegations as *“baseless and mischievous,”* Etim suggested that the claims were an orchestrated attempt to tarnish the institution’s reputation. *“These accusations appear to be the handiwork of individuals bent on discrediting the good image of our institution. The alleged letter is fake, and we categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded allegation,”* he said.

Etim further urged members of the public to disregard the publication and remain vigilant against fraudulent activities. He advised prospective students, parents, and guardians to verify admission offers directly with the institution to avoid falling prey to scams.

*“We caution the public to beware of such fraudulent schemes and to exercise due diligence when seeking admission. The Polytechnic remains committed to transparency, integrity, and academic excellence,”* the statement concluded.

Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic reaffirmed its position as a reputable institution and encouraged the public to report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities for proper investigation.
