Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has sparked debate after sending a provocative message to Nigerian women regarding sex. In a now-deleted Instagram story post, Kuti claimed that only prostitutes “offer” sex to just anyone, arguing that intimacy is a shared act, not a favour.

Kuti emphasized that sex should not be viewed as a favour unless one is a sex worker, and he stressed that sex itself is not inherently bad. He expressed his views on the topic in an Instagram story on September 19, 2024, stating that only sex workers “provide” sex.

“No one gives anyone sex except a prostitute. Sex is a mutual act. It’s not a favour, and you didn’t do anything special; it’s just sex – a natural act that men and women have engaged in since the beginning of time. Nigerian women, sex isn’t a favour unless you’re a prostitute, and even that isn’t a bad thing,” Kuti wrote.

His post received hundreds of responses from Instagram users, many of whom shared their opinions on sexual relationships in Nigeria. Many urged Nigerian men to stop feeling entitled to sex after only a few interactions.

In a separate incident, Kuti criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidies, accusing the president of prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of Nigerians.

Contrary to Tinubu’s claims that removing the subsidy was a “tough decision” made for the country’s benefit, Kuti argued that it was a “wicked decision” that worsened the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
