Jennifer Awele, the wife of late Nollywood actor Junior Pope, has shared a heartfelt tribute as she marks one year since the tragic loss of her husband.
In a moving Instagram post shared on April 10, she opened up about her grief, the pain of loss, and how her family has tried to stay strong despite overwhelming sorrow.
The tragic incident
Junior Pope Odonwodo, fondly known as Junior Pope, lost his life in a tragic boat accident on April 10, 2024. He was returning from a movie shoot in Anambra State when the boat capsized in the Anam River. The film, produced by Adanma Luke, became the center of controversy after reports revealed there were no proper safety measures in place for the cast and crew. The tragedy claimed multiple lives and sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry.
A year of grief
Jennifer, who has remained largely private since the incident, used her platform to reflect on the past year—a year marked by sadness, strength, and an unshakable love for the man she called her best friend.
“It’s been one year of standing in the face of our unimaginable loss,” she wrote. “Not a day has gone by without thinking of you. Your love still surrounds us. Your laughter echoes in our hearts.”
She described the last twelve months as a difficult journey for herself and their three young children—Jason, Jaden, and little Jamon, fondly called “J Papa” by his father. Despite the support from friends and family, Jennifer said the void left by her husband is one that words cannot fill.

“It’s been tough trying to stay strong for each other,” she wrote. “Even as the world around us seems to fall apart, we look up to heaven for strength.”
The mother of three revealed how difficult it has been to answer the questions her children ask about their father. “Jason and Jaden still want to know if Daddy will fulfill his promise to take them to a proper football academy. They remember his exact words—he said he wouldn’t miss their first official match for anything in the world,” she shared. “And Jamon keeps asking when Daddy will bring him the big toy car he promised.”
