“I gave her the key to my heart, but she changed the password.” — Ifedamola Fayomi

It was a bright and memorable day when I decided to visit a close friend. After a long school break, I wanted to welcome her back and catch up on lost time. I wasn’t alone—I had another friend with me. We settled comfortably on the rug in her room, talking and laughing, unaware that this day would change my life forever.

The first glimpse of her

Suddenly, the door swung open. A young woman walked in, carrying a plate of food. Her name was Rebecca, my friend’s younger sister. She had prepared a meal for her elder sister to taste. The moment I saw her, something shifted inside me. She was exactly the kind of woman I had always wanted. Her beauty was captivating, and I found myself unable to look away.

A heart hardened by past pain

But I hesitated. The room was filled with people, and I have always been shy. Approaching her felt impossible. More than that, my heart carried scars from the past. I had endured multiple heartbreaks, each one leaving me more distrustful. Over time, I convinced myself that love was nothing but a game. I made up my mind to become a playboy, to never take relationships seriously. This was my way of protecting myself—from pain, from disappointment, from ever being vulnerable again.

The first step: Reaching out

Later that evening, unable to shake off my thoughts about Rebecca, I texted my friend. I admitted that I liked her sister and asked her to connect us. She knew me well and trusted me, so she agreed. But in my mind, this was just another game.

My friend shared Rebecca’s contact with me, and I wasted no time reaching out. I told her I wanted a relationship. To my surprise, she refused. She was still healing from her own heartbreak and wasn’t ready to give love another chance.

A challenge worth pursuing

No woman had ever rejected me before. Her “no” only made me more determined. I intensified my efforts, sending sweet messages, showing interest, and doing everything I could to win her over. Weeks passed. Slowly, her walls began to crumble. Eventually, she said yes. At that moment, I felt victorious. I had achieved what I wanted. But deep down, I knew I was still pretending. My original plan remained—play the game, then walk away.

Love that transformed me

However, something unexpected happened. The more time I spent with Rebecca, the more she changed me. She believed in me in ways no one else had. I found myself doing things I never imagined. I started going to church regularly, something I had never taken seriously before. My commitment to her and my faith deepened. People noticed the difference in me. Before long, I was made a leader in my campus fellowship and later, a leader in the Joint Christian Campus Fellowship (JCCF).

A love that healed

Somewhere along the way, my plans to be a heartbreaker faded. Instead of playing with her feelings, I found myself falling for her completely. She gave me love, support, and healing. She mended my broken heart so completely that it felt like I had never been hurt before.

A future together

Three years have passed, and we are still together. Our bond has only grown stronger. Our families have met, and now we are preparing to make it official. Soon, we will take the next step in our journey—together.

What started as a plan for revenge turned into the greatest love story of my life.
