Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have begun investigation into a 31-year-old trader, Oduburu Lucy Oluchi, also known as Eze Chiamaka Lucy, over alleged possession and circulation of counterfeit currency amounting to ₦192,000.
According to the Commission, Oluchi was arrested on December 23, 2025, at Eke Nibo Market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State after fellow traders allegedly caught her attempting to use fake banknotes to purchase goods.
“She was apprehended by traders at the market and subsequently handed over to operatives of the Agunechemba Quasi Security outfit, who later transferred her to the Department of State Services,” the EFCC said in a statement.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that it took custody of the suspect from the DSS on December 29, 2025, adding that a search revealed counterfeit ₦1,000 notes totalling ₦192,000 in her possession.
“The fake currency consisted of notes bearing six different serial numbers,” the statement said. “Twenty-five notes carried serial number A/33 334233; thirty notes had serial number B/33 334432; fifty-one notes bore serial number A/83 353504; forty-three notes had serial number A/29 894433; forty-two notes bore serial number A/29 894434; while one note had serial number A29/898248.”
The EFCC noted that the alleged offence is contrary to Section 151 of the Criminal Code as well as Sections 4 and 5 of the Counterfeit Currency (Special Provisions) Act.
“The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the Commission said.
