The Bayelsa State Government has taken a major step towards improving safety and emergency healthcare delivery on its waterways with the deployment of newly acquired water ambulances by the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
The Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. (Mrs.) Faith Zibs-Godwin, made this known while addressing journalists in Yenagoa, shortly after the arrival of the specialised marine vessels.
She explained that the introduction of water ambulances is aimed at strengthening rapid medical response across riverine and coastal communities where access to health facilities is often limited by difficult terrain.
The initiative according to commissioner reflects the Assured Prosperity Administration’s focus on protecting lives and ensuring inclusive service delivery.
Dr. Zibs-Godwin noted that the water ambulances form part of a broader fleet expansion which also includes passenger ferries, cruise boats and cargo barges.
She added that the new vessels will work alongside existing marine assets already in operation, thereby improving surveillance, response time and overall safety on Bayelsa’s waterways.
The Commissioner further stated that the deployment will significantly reduce delays in evacuating patients during emergencies, particularly in hard-to-reach communities, while also supporting other marine activities such as transportation, tourism and logistics.
While receiving the vessels at the Ministry’s jetty in Yenagoa, Dr. Zibs-Godwin commended Governor Douye Diri for his sustained commitment to developing a safe, efficient and modern marine transport system in the state. She said the governor’s support has continued to drive strategic investments in the maritime sector.
She assured that the Ministry would ensure the proper utilisation and maintenance of the water ambulances, stressing that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance waterway safety, improve emergency response and advance Bayelsa State’s Blue Economy agenda.
