The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a stern ultimatum to the public following a surge in harassment and physical assaults targeting its enforcement personnel across the metropolis.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, yesterday condemned the increasing trend of violence against officers, describing such actions as a “direct affront to public order.”
Gbadegesin expressed deep concern over recent reports of personnel being threatened, intimidated, or physically harmed while enforcing environmental sanitation laws.

He noted that these officers are frontline workers tasked with safeguarding public health and ensuring the state’s waste regulations are strictly followed.
“Enforcement officers are deployed to protect public health and keep Lagos clean,” Gbadegesin stated. “Any form of violence or intimidation against them will be met with the full weight of the law.”
Gbadegesin reminded residents that its operations are firmly supported by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.
Under this legislation, individuals found disrupting lawful operations will face immediate arrest.
Gbadegesin confirmed the agency will pursue criminal charges against anyone found guilty of assaulting its staff.
He advised that residents are legally required to comply with waste disposal guidelines rather than resorting to “self-help” or confrontation.
Beyond legal warnings, Gbadegesin appealed to the conscience of Lagosians, urging cooperation to achieve the “Greater Lagos” vision.
He called on community leaders, market associations, and transport unions to act as advocates for order and environmental responsibility.

He further advised residents to use official channels to report environmental infractions or grievances rather than engaging in heated altercations with field officers.
Despite the challenges, he reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to its mandate.
“LAWMA remains resolute in its mission to deliver a cleaner, healthier, and more liveable city for all residents,” Gbadegesin said.
