In a move to overhaul Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has joined fellow leaders for the inaugural meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) Ad-hoc High-Level Committee on Livestock Development.
The committee, chaired by the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, was established following resolutions from the 155th NEC meeting.

The high-powered group is tasked with creating a roadmap to transition the nation’s livestock sector from traditional practices into a modern, competitive industry.
During the session, committee members reviewed their terms of reference, emphasising the “urgency of coordinated national action.
The deliberations centered on several key pillars such as shifting toward sustainable and technology-driven ranching and production, ensuring Nigerian livestock products meet international standards for trade and integrating livestock development into the broader national goal of food security and non-oil revenue growth.
Speaking on the impact of these national deliberations, Uzodimma expressed confidence in Imo State’s readiness to tap into the emerging opportunities.
He noted that the state has already laid the groundwork through proactive policies designed to empower local farmers and investors.
“In Imo State, we are well positioned to leverage these national initiatives,” Uzodimma stated. “Deliberate measures and policies are already in place to ensure our people benefit meaningfully from the renewed focus on livestock development.”
The governor’s participation underscores a growing commitment among state leaders to address long-standing challenges in the livestock sector, including farmer-herder relations and supply chain inefficiencies, by treating the industry as a vital commercial asset rather than a subsistence activity.
