Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the total transformation of Ikirunland, even as traditional leaders lambasted the previous government for destroying the peace of the ancient town.
The governor made this pledge yesterday, during a high-profile condolence visit to Ikirun to honour the memories of several prominent leaders who recently passed away.
The visit took a poignant turn when the Eesa of Ikirun and Head of the Akirun-in-Council, High Chief Kareem Adetoyese, delivered a stinging critique of the state’s previous administration.
Recalling the mid-2022 crisis, Adetoyese described a period of “premeditated violence and killings” sparked by the politicization of the kingship (Akirun) stool.
He revealed that the unrest was so severe he was forced into exile for several months.
“The previous government set Ikirun on fire,” Adetoyese lamented. “We recorded casualties before you came in. The governor’s executive order saved us and rescued us from violence. We cannot forget how the previous administration relegated Ikirun and denied us opportunities.”
Adeleke’s visit was primarily to commiserate with the families of four major pillars of the Ikirun community who recently transitioned.
Ismahil Adeyemi, the late Head of Ikirun Princes, DIG Lawal Kasali, the Asiwaju of Ikirunland and retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, and Sheikh Yunus Balogun, the Chief Imam of Ikirunland.
The governor described their departures as significant losses to the state but urged the families to take solace in the legacies of service and integrity left behind by the deceased.
Adeleke restated his determination to ensure Ikirun never returns to the days of neglect.

He noted that his administration would continue to prioritise infrastructure and security in the town, viewing the current peace as a foundation for economic growth.
The Eesa of Ikirun commended the governor for reviving the town’s fortunes, noting that Adeleke’s leadership has been a “continuous demonstration of love” for the people of Ikirun since he assumed office.
