Grammy-nominated singer Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has described it as an insult to compare Afrobeats star Wizkid to his father.
Kuti made the remarks during a recent Instagram livestream, where he warned Wizkid’s fans, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to stop referring to the Ojuelegba crooner as the modern-day equivalent of Fela.
According to Seun Kuti, drawing parallels between any contemporary artist and the late Afrobeat legend undermines Fela’s legacy and reflects ignorance rather than admiration.

“Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You try to claim that your fake artiste is the new Fela. Then when you people saw that the shoes were too big to fill and people like me did not allow you to get away with those insults… it is actually an insult,” he said.
The activist-musician criticised what he described as a lack of respect rooted in ignorance, not defiance.
“You people have no respect. If your lack of respect came from defiance, I would respect it. But your lack of respect comes from ignorance,” he added.
Seun Kuti further accused overzealous fan bases of contributing negatively to the music industry, noting that fan rivalries have made collaborations between artists increasingly difficult.
“Wizkid fans are online disrespecting Fela again. Why must you always involve Fela in your petty discussions? The overzealousness of some fans has significantly affected the music industry. Some artists can’t even collaborate because of fan rivalries,” he stated.
He concluded by urging Wizkid FC to focus on enjoying their favourite artist’s music without comparisons, insisting that constant comparisons signal a lack of deeper artistic fulfillment.
“Concentrate on your artist. Can’t you enjoy the music without comparing it to something else?” he said.
