Residents of Offa, a town in Kwara State, were thrown into panic late Thursday after loud explosions damaged properties in different parts of the community.
The incidents occurred on the same night the United States carried out multiple airstrikes against ISIS terrorists in Sokoto State, about 540 kilometres away by air from Offa.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the first blast affected buildings near a Muslim praying ground, while a second explosion was reported close to Solid Worth Hotel, roughly five minutes away from the first location.
Security concerns intensified after an undetonated explosive device was allegedly found at the second site, although authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause or nature of the incidents.
Confirming the development, the Kwara State Police Command spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, told TheCable that the incident occurred around 10 pm.
“Investigations are ongoing of that incident to ascertain what exactly happened, if it is an explosion or not,” she said.
In a separate statement, Abiola Babatunde, chief press secretary to the chairman of Offa Local Government Area, said the council had been briefed on the situation.
He added that security agencies have sealed off the affected locations to enable a comprehensive investigation.
