Afrobeats star Seun Kuti has stirred debate on social media after openly stating that he does not believe in prayer.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, the outspoken musician said he has never prayed in his life, describing prayer as ineffective and childish.
According to Kuti, an individual’s life outcomes are shaped by choices and actions, not by prayers.
“I have never prayed before in my life. I don’t know how to pray. I don’t believe it works,” he said. “Your life is your prayer. Praying in public or aloud is eye service. It is childishness.”

Kuti argued that personal responsibility, discipline, and action are more powerful than spiritual appeals, insisting that what people do with their lives ultimately determines their success or failure.
“Your life is the prayer. What you do with your life is your prayer. That is the only prayer. Your action is prayer,” he stated.
Addressing common religious beliefs, the singer questioned the logic behind prayer, particularly within the context of a God who is already aware of and determines outcomes.
“This concept of God that most people have is why prayer is even now completely null and void,” he said. “You claim this God has already written everything from the beginning to the end and his will must be done.”
According to Kuti, prayers only work if they align with what believers describe as God’s will, a reality he claimed religious leaders often avoid discussing.
“So, except your prayer aligns with his will, it will not be answered. But clerics won’t tell you this because they want to exploit you,” he added.
The son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti further maintained that he prefers to confront his challenges directly rather than pray about them.
“I solve my problems. I don’t pray over my problems,” he said. “If prayer solves problems, prisons and hospitals would be empty.”
Kuti’s comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users praising his honesty and critical thinking, while others criticised his stance as dismissive of faith and spirituality.
Known for his unapologetic views on politics, religion, and social structures, Seun Kuti has consistently used his platform to challenge widely held beliefs, often sparking controversy and public discourse.
