Nigeria’s upstream petroleum regulator has set its sights on higher crude oil output and accelerated gas development as Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan formally assumed office as Commission Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Speaking at her first town hall meeting with management and staff on Tuesday, 23 December, Eyesan said growing production levels would be central to the Commission’s agenda as it carries out its mandate under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
She said the NUPRC would position itself as a business enabler rather than a bottleneck, stressing that effective regulation must support investment, innovation and operational efficiency across the upstream sector.
“The goal is that we must enable the industry. We are regulators. We must enable the industry from our interactions with the stakeholders, from our interactions with everybody,” Eyesan said, adding that the Commission sits at the heart of Nigeria’s oil and gas value chain.
The new CCE, who has over three decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, identified gas expansion as a strategic priority alongside crude oil production growth, noting its importance to energy security, industrialisation and economic diversification.
Eyesan also pledged to deepen digitisation within the Commission to improve transparency, speed up regulatory processes and enhance investor confidence.
She said these reforms, combined with stronger technical capacity, would help reposition the NUPRC as a benchmark regulator on the African continent.
She further assured staff of an open-door leadership style anchored on collaboration and continuous engagement, while calling for unity and commitment as the industry enters what she described as a new phase of transformation.
She expressed confidence that with the support of management and staff, the Commission would deliver measurable improvements in production, regulatory efficiency and stakeholder trust.
