Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has urged his players to raise their performance level despite securing a 2–1 win over Tanzania in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ademola Lookman’s second-half strike proved decisive for Nigeria after Tanzania drew level before halftime, making the contest more difficult than expected.
Speaking after the match, Chelle praised his team’s attacking effort, particularly in the first half, but admitted that errors after the break gave Tanzania the opportunity to get back into the game.
He described the victory as a positive start but stressed the need for better discipline and game management as the competition progresses.
“At this level, games are decided by fine margins. We played well, but we must cut out mistakes, especially when facing tougher opponents,” Chelle said.

The coach noted that the match offered valuable insights for the technical crew ahead of more demanding fixtures in the group.
“AFCON requires consistency. We will review this match closely and make adjustments before the next game,” he added.
While satisfied with the opening result, Chelle emphasized that gradual improvement remains the team’s main focus throughout the tournament.
He confirmed that the technical team would immediately begin analyzing the match to correct shortcomings ahead of Saturday’s crucial encounter against Tunisia.
The victory places the Super Eagles in a strong position in Group C, while Tanzania were left disappointed after a spirited performance.
