Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed the story behind his collaboration with rising star Omah Lay, explaining that their partnership grew out of a misunderstanding that the Soso crooner had publicly shared about his feelings toward him.
Last year, Omah Lay sparked conversation when he admitted he had assumed that Davido “hated” him until the DMW boss played his music during a livestream with American content creator Kai Cenat in Lagos.

The moment, which went viral, prompted Omah Lay to reconsider his perception of Davido.
In a recent video that has since trended online, Davido recounted how he reached out to Omah Lay after seeing his tweet. Their exchange, he said, eventually led to the creation of their hit single, With You.
“How Omah Lay and I got together was, Kai Cenat came to Nigeria and I was driving him to the club,” Davido explained. “Then Omah Lay’s song comes up, and he asks, ‘Who is this?’ I told him, ‘Oh! This is Omah Lay, he is hot.’”
The following day, Omah Lay tweeted, expressing surprise and relief. “Wow! Davido gave me a shoutout on a livestream, I thought he hated me,’” he wrote. Seeing the tweet, Davido quickly slid into his DMs, writing, “‘Why would you think I hate you? We’ve never met.’”
Their conversation opened the door to further communication, and the two artists began exchanging ideas and music.
According to Davido, they worked on about four songs together before settling on With You as the single they would release.
“We eventually exchanged numbers and started going back-and-forth with music. We did about four songs, and he chose With You as the one we would release,” Davido said.
With You has become one of the standout tracks on Davido’s fifth studio album, 5ive, and has earned critical acclaim.
The song’s success has now reached international recognition, as it has been nominated for the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
Davido’s revelation highlights the unexpected ways collaborations in the music industry can begin, often sparked by small gestures, social media interactions, or even misunderstandings.
In this case, a simple livestream shoutout transformed what could have been an awkward assumption into a chart-topping collaboration.
For fans of both artists, the story behind With You adds another layer of excitement to the track, showing how communication, openness, and mutual respect can turn potential rivalry or doubt into creative synergy.
As Davido continues to dominate global Afrobeats charts, collaborations like this demonstrate his willingness to uplift emerging talents and create music that resonates both in Africa and internationally.
