Media personality Toke Makinwa has challenged the long-held stereotype that women are the primary “gold diggers” in relationships, insisting that men are often the ones strategically pursuing wealth through marriage.
Speaking on her podcast with Tacha, Makinwa criticised society’s tendency to stigmatise women who marry wealthy men, while men who do the same rarely face scrutiny.

She argued that many men deliberately marry into affluent families without the same public criticism women receive.
“People are constantly insulting women for knowing what they want,” Makinwa said. “You sit with all these podcasts as men, or you air your thoughts as some men, and say women are dating men for money. Women are doing this. Men are the biggest gold diggers in the world. They marry generational wealth, and they do it without shame.”
Makinwa clarified that her comments were not meant to vilify men who marry strategically for financial security. She noted that financial considerations have always been a part of marriage on both sides, and choosing a partner with resources is not inherently wrong.
“And I don’t hate them. If my brother comes to me with two ladies and asks which one to marry, I will advise him to marry the one from a good financial background,” she added.
Her comments have sparked conversations on social media, with many agreeing that men’s pursuit of financially secure partners is often overlooked, while women are unfairly judged for similar choices.
Toke Makinwa, known for her outspoken views on relationships and social issues, continues to use her platform to challenge societal norms and encourage open discussions on topics often considered taboo.
