Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino has acknowledged the difficulty of coping without Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, stressing how crucial the winger has been in recent weeks.
Lookman, who has now scored in back-to-back matches for the first time this campaign, played a key role in Atalanta’s 2–0 win over Fiorentina, continuing his impressive resurgence under Palladino’s guidance.
Speaking after Atalanta’s 3–1 Serie A loss to Verona, the coach admitted that losing both Lookman and Ivorian defender Odilon Kossounou will be a significant challenge. However, he expressed optimism with the return of Sead Kolašinac and Giorgio Scalvini, describing them as equally vital players.
“We’re missing two major figures for us, Lookman and Kossounou players who bring strength and decisiveness,” Palladino stated. “But we’re getting Kolasinac and Scalvini back, and they are just as important.”
He added that the staff is working to bring Sulemana back to full fitness after a minor issue, stressing that he wants every squad member ready and involved.
Despite the weekend defeat, Palladino reiterated that the team is more focused on its long-term development than immediate standings.
Lookman’s excellent form has been a major plus for both Atalanta and the Nigerian national team, especially with AFCON 2025 approaching. Palladino praised the forward’s complete contribution, noting his balance of attacking threat and defensive effort.
“I approached Lookman the same way I did with the entire squad, speaking to him individually,” said Palladino. “He’s sharp, he understands quickly. His attacking play is outstanding, but his defensive work is equally impressive. He’s fully committed and an invaluable player.”
Earlier in the season, former Atalanta coach Ivan Jurić had a brief, heated exchange with the Nigerian winger, though he stated the incident would be addressed privately within the team.
