President Bola Tinubu on Monday launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund at the State House, calling on citizens to shun divisive language and embrace mutual respect and tolerance as the nation confronts persistent security threats.
Speaking at the solemn ceremony, the President stressed that national unity remains the bedrock of progress.
“In the face of multiple challenges, we must stand together as one indivisible people,” he said, warning that inflammatory rhetoric only weakens the collective resolve needed to overcome insurgency, banditry, and other threats.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of serving personnel and the families of fallen heroes.
He paid glowing tribute to the armed forces, describing the 2026 remembrance activities as “a new chapter” in honouring their sacrifices.
A highlight of the event was the announcement of a novel Defence Ministry programme that will mobilise retired military officers to help reclaim ungoverned spaces across the country.
The initiative, according to the President, will restore government authority, enhance security, and unlock economic opportunities in long-neglected communities.
The launch recorded an immediate ₦320 million in donations, with contributions from the Presidency, National Assembly leadership, service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, ministers, and private sector representatives.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who jointly received the emblem, commended the armed forces for their patriotism and pledged legislative support for improved funding and welfare packages.
The event marks the formal commencement of activities leading to the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day on 15 January, a period traditionally dedicated to honouring Nigeria’s fallen heroes and supporting serving personnel and veterans.
President Tinubu’s appeal for unity comes against the backdrop of heightened ethnic and religious tensions in parts of the country, underscoring the administration’s determination to foster cohesion while tackling insecurity head-on.
