The family of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has formally barred his widow, Omowunmi, from using their surname until the paternity of her son, Liam, is legally confirmed.
In an official statement jointly signed by the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, the family announced that Wunmi is prohibited from identifying herself with the Aloba name while the DNA dispute remains unresolved.
According to the statement, the restriction became necessary due to the ongoing disagreement surrounding the paternity of Liam following Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.

The family argued that Wunmi was never legally married to the late singer, insisting that neither a statutory marriage nor a proper Yoruba customary marriage took place between the couple.
“For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed,” the statement read.
The development adds another layer to the long-running saga surrounding Mohbad’s death. The singer passed away after receiving an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse. Amid widespread public outcry, his body was exhumed for an autopsy.
In May 2025, however, the investigation hit a major setback after pathologists reported that the cause of death could not be determined.
In the latest update, the family also announced that Oladayo Ogungbe has been appointed as their sole legal representative in all matters relating to the DNA case and the administration of Mohbad’s estate.
They further confirmed that legal practitioner Wahab Shittu will continue to represent the family in dealings with investigative authorities probing the singer’s death.

The Aloba family added that both Wunmi and Liam will be included in the administration of Mohbad’s estate, but only after a DNA test conclusively establishes that the late singer is the child’s biological father.
The ongoing dispute has continued to spark public debate, with many calling for a fair and transparent resolution to both the paternity issue and the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
