The Senate on Thursday confirmed Dr Bernard Doro as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, following a brief but confident screening session during which lawmakers expressed satisfaction with his credentials and vision.
Doro, a technocrat from Plateau State, assured senators of his commitment to building an inclusive, transparent, and efficient humanitarian system if assigned to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
“I intend to contribute my quota to the Renewed Hope Agenda by transferring the different experiences to help in policy crafting and implementation. I should be a voice that’ll impact the country positively,” Doro said during the screening.
He outlined plans to reform humanitarian interventions in the country by prioritising fairness, dignity, and accountability.
“Should I be assigned the humanitarian ministry, what I will be looking to do in order to bring some innovation into the ministry will be to create a humanitarian ecosystem that is efficient, transparent, and centred on the person being cared for.
“And this is with a view to bringing dignity to the individual, to ensure that the needs of this individual are met. And this will be done based on principles that are well established in providing humanitarian action. Things around impartiality, things around independence, things about just being human in our care for people,” he said.
The New Daily Prime earlier broke the news of Doro’s arrival the National Assembly before facing the federal lawmakers.
Doro also pledged to enhance coordination among agencies to eliminate duplication and improve results, adding that technology would play a key role in achieving these goals.
“I will create synergy amongst the different agencies of government and ensure that we are able to reduce duplication and achieve results. I believe that technology can help us to be able to achieve that,” he added.
Senators, satisfied with his presentation, asked him to take a bow and leave – confirming his nomination without objection.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate seeking Doro’s confirmation in line with Section 147 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). His appointment follows the elevation of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, his predecessor, who now serves as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described Doro as a highly experienced professional with over 20 years of practice across clinical medicine, pharmaceutical management, and leadership roles in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Born on January 23, 1969, in Kwall, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Doro holds degrees in Pharmacy and Law, an MBA in IT-driven business strategy, and a Master’s in Advanced Clinical Practice.
He is also an Independent Prescriber and Advanced Clinical Practitioner with NHS frontline experience in urgent care, general practice, and hospital settings.
Speaking before his screening by the Senate, Doro exclusively shared his excitement with the New Daily Prime while “looking forward to a smooth senate clearance and so that we can begin the work for our people. Everything we do is about our people, everything we do is about humanity and that is our desire.”
He expressed desire to serve the people, adding that “our lives is lived for the people.”
With Thursday’s confirmation, Doro is expected to be sworn in as a member of the Federal Executive Council at the next meeting.
