The Dangote Refinery has announced a major expansion plan that will see its production capacity increase from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, positioning it as the largest refinery in the world once completed.
The announcement was made by the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, during a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday. Dangote, accompanied by his long-time associate and Chairman of First Bank, Mr Femi Otedola, revealed that construction work on the expansion project would commence immediately.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” Dangote stated.
He disclosed that the construction phase would require around 65,000 workers, with 85 per cent of the workforce to be drawn from Nigeria.
The industrialist also revealed that the refinery’s power generation capacity would be doubled from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts, and that fuel production would be upgraded to the Euro 6 standard — an improvement on the current Euro 5 specification.

In a significant development for investors, Dangote confirmed plans to list the refinery on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2026, allowing citizens to own shares in what is expected to be one of the most valuable companies in Africa.
Dangote expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support of the refinery project, noting that the expansion would be completed within three years.
“This is a landmark step for Nigeria’s energy independence and industrial growth,” he added.
The Dangote Refinery, which began operations earlier this year, is regarded as a key component of Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its reliance on imported petroleum products and strengthen its economic resilience.
