The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno State has refuted allegations of pre-selecting “anointed” candidates for the local government elections slated for 25 December 2025, reaffirming its commitment to transparent and democratic processes.
State Chairman Bello Ayuba dismissed the claims during a press briefing in Maiduguri, emphasising that the party is ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants.
Ayuba confirmed that the APC has formally notified the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) of its readiness to participate in the polls across the state’s 27 local government areas and 312 wards.
He outlined robust arrangements to guarantee fair primaries, including the establishment of four key committees: Sale of Forms, Screening, Appeal, and Reconciliation.
The Sale of Forms Committee is already distributing nomination forms free of charge to members aspiring for chairmanship and councillorship positions, fostering accessibility.
“The Screening Committee will verify all documents submitted by aspirants, a process expected to last approximately one week before primaries commence,” Ayuba explained.
He stressed that even in cases with a single aspirant, affirmation committees will assess the candidate’s popularity and acceptability among party members, ensuring grassroots endorsement.
Ayuba underscored the APC’s dedication to internal democracy and fair competition. “The APC in Borno is fair to all. No one has been denied access to nomination forms, and every aspirant is treated equally,” he declared, rejecting notions of favouritism or predetermined outcomes.
The party’s rigorous framework aims to uphold transparency and credibility throughout the electoral process.
