Police in Staffordshire have launched a murder investigation following the tragic deaths of two children at a home in Stafford.
According to Staffordshire Police, officers were called to a property in the town at around 7:30am on Sunday after receiving a report from the West Midlands Ambulance Service.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but despite their efforts, two children were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the ages or identities of the victims, citing the need to notify extended family members. The children’s next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specially trained officers.
A 43-year-old woman from the Stafford area has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody while investigations continue.
Police have not disclosed her relationship to the children, but sources suggest that she is known to the victims.
Detective Inspector Kirsty Oldfield, who is leading the investigation, described the incident as utterly heartbreaking and said a dedicated team of officers was working to piece together the events that led to the children’s deaths.
“We are working hard to understand more about what happened leading up to these two children tragically losing their lives,” Oldfield said. “We ask that people do not speculate at this stage as it is distressing for family and friends and could hinder our inquiries.”
She added that officers are conducting door-to-door inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
Police reassured residents that there is no wider threat to the public, urging calm and sensitivity as the investigation progresses.
A scene guard remains in place at the property, and forensic teams were seen entering the home throughout the day as officers continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths.
