Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who chairs the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, has defended the main opposition party’s resilience.
He predicted the party’s successful return to power in the 2027 general elections despite a wave of high-profile defections.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Saturday, Bala, who also holds a key role on the PDP’s National Convention committee, admitted he was “more than concerned” by the departure of some governors and legislators to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, he confirmed that the party’s leadership is engaged in quiet, intensive efforts to stabilise its internal structure and restore public confidence.
Bala accused the current APC-led government of deploying aggressive and forceful strategies to undermine the opposition, suggesting that the ruling party is attempting to convert Nigeria into a de facto one-party state.
Despite these “coercive tactics,” Bala noted that the exodus of members would not halt the PDP’s political resurgence.
He maintained that the party’s core support base at the grassroots level remains loyal, and even defectors are facing backlash from their constituents.
He reaffirmed his personal commitment, declaring, “I assure you I am not going anywhere. I am in PDP.”
Bala acknowledged the possibility of further defections, including from lawmakers in his own state, who he alleged are being “controlled [and] bought.”
He stressed that the PDP’s foundation in Bauchi State remains firm, adding that Nigerians desire change and view the PDP as the viable option.
The governor highlighted that most significant national achievements in Nigeria were established by successive PDP administrations, positioning the party as the only credible platform for national renewal.
He projected that the PDP’s internal strength would lead to new leaders emerging in 2027 to overcome the APC’s “deceptive” politics, mirroring his own unexpected electoral success.
Addressing internal rumblings, the PDP stalwart confirmed that leaders are actively working to resolve internal lawsuits and disputes—many of which he characterised as artificial attempts to destabilise the party’s convention preparations.
He dismissed notions of a factionalised party, arguing the PDP is structurally more cohesive than most opposition groups.
He also addressed speculation regarding Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.
Bala confirmed Mbah has not declared his intent to leave, while praising Fubara as a loyal PDP member who has admirably navigated significant challenges in his administration.

Bala welcomed the mention of prominent political figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, potentially returning to or associating with the party.
He emphasised that the PDP governors are united in setting aside personal ambitions to produce a leadership slate for 2027 that will be the best choice to govern Nigeria.
