Fulham and Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, is closing in on a major milestone of becoming the Nigerian with the most Premier League appearances, edging past former Newcastle star Shola Ameobi.
In an exclusive interview with SuperSport, Iwobi reflects on his journey so far, the pride of playing alongside fellow Nigerians at Fulham, and his deep belief in the Super Eagles’ chances of reaching the next FIFA World Cup.
“It feels amazing, honestly,” Iwobi said. “To be this close to holding the record is something I never really imagined. I’ve just been focused on playing. But when I talk to my family and look back, I realise how far I’ve come. It’s a huge honour — and to have done it in fewer years than a legend like Shola Ameobi gives me hope that I’ve still got more to give and records to build on.”
On Nigeria’s World Cup ambitions, Iwobi remains optimistic. “Of course, we believe. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t be putting in the work every day. We just need the fans to keep believing in us too — that support means everything.”
At Fulham, Iwobi is thriving, especially with fellow Nigerian internationals Calvin Bassey and new arrival Samuel Chukwueze in the squad.
“It’s great having Samuel join us. Not just because he’s Nigerian, but because he’s a top guy on and off the pitch,” Iwobi said. “We joke that we’re basically Naija FC now. It reminds me of Leicester with Iheanacho and Ndidi, or Forest with Aina, Awoniyi, and Dennis. It’s just nice having your brothers with you — it makes a difference.”
Looking ahead to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Iwobi says the target is clear.
“You always want to do better than before — and the only way to improve is to win. Let’s see how far we can go.”
