Nigerian singer and songwriter Omawumi Megbele, popularly known as Omawumi, has expressed deep gratitude to ace music producer Cobhams Asuquo, crediting him for playing a crucial role in the early success of her career.

“Cobhams gave me one of my first opportunities outside Idols West Africa,” Omawumi revealed. “The first time we met, he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo, you know he likes to funkify his name. There is a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it.’”
Despite being uncertain about the project’s outcome at the time, Omawumi said she accepted the offer, a decision that would prove pivotal for her burgeoning career. The collaboration soon opened major doors for her in the entertainment industry.
“I did the song, and then the agency picked it,” she recalled. “I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. I also opened for P-Square in four different locations.”
According to the “In the Music” crooner, working with Cobhams not only boosted her visibility but also refined her artistry.
She described him as a mentor who taught her essential skills about stage performance and vocal control that have continued to shape her music.
“Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture. He made me understand how to carry myself, how to own the stage, and how to interpret a song with emotion,” Omawumi added.
The collaboration marked one of Omawumi’s earliest breakthroughs, eventually establishing her as one of Nigeria’s most soulful and dynamic performers.
Cobhams Asuquo, known for his exceptional ear for music and ability to nurture raw talent, has produced for several of Nigeria’s biggest stars, including Asa, Banky W, and Timi Dakolo. Omawumi’s revelation further highlights his influence on shaping the Nigerian music scene.
Over the years, Omawumi has built an impressive career defined by powerful vocals, socially conscious lyrics, and stage charisma.
With hits such as If You Ask Me, Bottom Belle, and Somtin, she continues to be celebrated as one of the leading female voices in Afrobeats and soul music.
Reflecting on her journey, the singer said she remains grateful for those who believed in her talent from the start, particularly Cobhams, whose guidance, she believes, played a major role in her success story.
“I’ll always appreciate people like Cobhams,” Omawumi concluded. “He saw something in me even before the world did, and that’s something I’ll never forget.”
