Kwara United have parted ways with their technical adviser, Tunde Sanni, following a disappointing run of results that culminated in a 1-0 home defeat to Abia Warriors on Sunday. The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side made the announcement shortly after the matchday seven fixture held at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.
Emeka Obioma netted the decisive goal for Abia Warriors from the penalty spot just four minutes into the second half, sealing the win and compounding Kwara United’s early season struggles. The defeat proved to be the final straw for Sanni, who has been under growing pressure from fans and club executives.
Sanni’s troubles began earlier in the campaign when Kwara United suffered an early exit from the CAF Confederation Cup. The Ilorin-based club crashed out in the first round of the competition, falling 5-3 on aggregate to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.
In the wake of the recent setback, the club has appointed assistant coach Ashifat Sulaiman as interim head coach. Sulaiman is expected to take charge of the team immediately as the management begins its search for a permanent replacement.
Veteran coach Gbenga Ogunbote has emerged as the frontrunner to fill the vacant position. Ogunbote, a respected figure in Nigerian football, was most recently in charge of Shooting Stars before departing ahead of the current NPFL season. His impressive résumé includes stints with Enyimba and Rangers, where he earned a reputation for building competitive squads and achieving solid league finishes.
Reports also suggest that Kwara United are keeping tabs on Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, as a possible alternative if talks with Ogunbote do not materialize.
With the club languishing in the lower half of the NPFL table, Kwara United’s management is determined to steer the team back on track. The coming days will be crucial as they look to appoint a capable leader to revive their season and restore confidence among their fans.
