The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Anambra governorship election scheduled for 8 November 2025, John Nwosu, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to intensify efforts to tackle vote buying, warning that the practice threatens the credibility of the upcoming poll.
Nwosu, one of 16 candidates listed by INEC on 4 June 2025, aims to challenge incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
In a statement issued yesterday, Nwosu expressed dismay at the prevalent culture of vote buying in Nigerian elections, citing instances during the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election on 16 August 2025, where voters were seen openly negotiating ballot prices.
“Such practices not only derail the true will of the people but also reduce elections to an auction, where the state is handed to the highest bidder,” he said.
Nwosu urged INEC to introduce secure voting cubicles to ensure ballot secrecy, arguing that exposed polling areas encourage vote buying and undermine electoral integrity.
“INEC must provide secure voting cubicles to ensure ballots remain private.
“Nigeria has robust electoral laws which, if enforced, can deliver outcomes that benefit society,” Nwosu stated, emphasising that the Anambra election offers INEC an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and fairness.
He also highlighted the critical role of security agencies in curbing vote buying on election day, noting, “The success of any political activity depends largely on security.
“While it’s not solely INEC’s duty, the Commission must create an environment that allows citizens to vote freely.”
