The Women’s Super League has postponed Sunday’s fixture between Liverpool and Aston Villa following the death of former Reds manager Matt Beard.
In a statement released by the league confirmed the match will be rescheduled, with a new date to be communicated later. It also announced that a minute’s silence will be observed before every WSL and WSL2 game this weekend in Beard’s memory.
Beard, who died at the age of 47, left a lasting mark on Liverpool Women during two separate stints in charge. First appointed in 2012, he quickly transformed the team into a dominant force, guiding them to consecutive league titles in 2013 and 2014 and leading them into Europe for the first time with a Champions League campaign.
He later worked with clubs including West Ham and Boston Breakers in the United States before returning to Merseyside in 2021. His second spell was just as significant, as he led Liverpool back into the WSL in 2022 after a season in the Championship and secured a solid seventh-place finish in their comeback year. Beard remained in charge until earlier this year.
Liverpool described him as more than just a successful coach, paying tribute to his character and influence. “Matt was an extremely committed and successful manager,” the club said in a statement. “But above all, he was a man of integrity and warmth, remembered with deep fondness by everyone who worked with him.”
In June, Beard was appointed head coach of Burnley Women but stepped down after two months. Following his passing, Burnley also announced that their Women’s National League fixture against West Bromwich Albion would not take place on Sunday.
Across English women’s football, tributes have poured in for a manager widely admired for both his tactical acumen and his personal touch. Beard’s career, decorated with silverware and respect, leaves a legacy that will be felt for years to come.
