The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come under fire following a social media post quoting a Bible verse to promote its upcoming public engagement series.
In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the Commission announced the 164th edition of EFCC Connect, themed “Fighting Economic and Financial Crimes in the House of God.” The EFCC also cited 1 Peter 4:17, which says “judgment shall start from the house of God.”
The message, however, sparked heated reactions from Nigerians online, with many accusing the agency of misplacing its priorities and practicing selective enforcement.
One user, @SMARTEk2050, wrote: “No judgment of EFCC should start from the house of governments and public offices first. Allow God’s judgment to start from His own house.”
Another, @Jiro Dezi, quipped: “From EFCC office first.”
Similarly, @Tache accused the agency of bias, commenting: “Eagle wey dey look one direction.”
@Blacklord Plus Two added: “You are not in position to judge the house of God.”
Critics also questioned the EFCC’s impartiality. @Big Dada wrote: “You have no jurisdiction to say such thing, when your own judgment favours the corrupt politicians looting the economy. Shame on you.”
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not responded to the backlash. The upcoming EFCC Connect session is expected to focus on addressing financial crimes in religious institutions, a subject that has already drawn significant public attention.
